When it comes to spectacular seaside escapes and island living, I look to the swoon-worthy photos of 500px community member Sarah Lee for a surge of inspiration—and instant wanderlust. Hailing from Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, Sarah is obsessed with camera viewfinders, swim fins, and the sea. Her passion for underwater and surf photography was shaped by a childhood spent constantly playing in and around the ocean.
Her goal as a photographer? To capture and enhance the beauty that surrounds her. I’ve been a long-time fan of her work now, so I caught up with her and asked her to share some of her favorite destinations in the world for underwater and ocean photography with me. Thanks to her recommendations, I have summer AND travel on the brain again.
Read on to dive into her top 5 picks for photogenic beaches, oceans, and islands—and consider adding these to your own must-see list! Plus, we also added in the top places in her own personal travel bucket list.
Dreamiest Beach to Photograph: Number One Beach, Dominica
This beach is straight out of Pirates of the Caribbean, literally. Pirates 2 & 3 were actually filmed on this beach. The water isn’t ideal for swimming at all, but if you want to be surrounded by wild cliffs and endless palm trees all by yourself, then this is the spot for you.
Dreamiest Ocean to Photograph: Ba’a Atoll, Maldives
Whale sharks, deserted mini sand islands, and manta rays! This is a sea life playground.
Best for Underwater Photography: Tavarua Island Resort, Fiji
Crystal clear waters, blue starfish, and gorgeous reef.
Best Sunrise to Photograph: Manly Beach, Australia
Australians know how to make the most of their day. Sunrises here are absolutely gorgeous!
Best Sunset to Photograph: Byron Bay, Australia
Though you don’t see the sun set on the horizon, Byron — being the northernmost facing point on the East coast of Australia — has some of the most gorgeous weather and sunsets.
BONUS: Top 3 Places in Sarah Lee’s Photography Bucket List
1. Western Australia
2. Tonga
3. South-Western islands of Japan
